An eventful intervention. During the night of November 18 to 19, Haute-Garonne firefighters intervened to contain several straw bale and pallet fires on three roundabouts near the A64 and A61 motorways.

Angry farmers?

If the causes of these fires have not been revealed by the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of Haute-Garonne (SDIS 31), they could be linked to the mobilization of farmers scheduled for Monday, November 18 in several cantons of the department.

In question, the free trade treaty with Mercosur which aims to intensify trade between the European Union and South America, by finding agreements concerning imports and exports on both sides of the Atlantic.

Concretely, cattle and poultry breeders, beet and corn producers, sugar and ethanol manufacturers particularly fear the effects of reduction in import taxes coming from Brazil or Argentina.

A position taken up at European level by their organizations with the support of the COPA-Cogeca union, to which the FNSEA is affiliated. In a press release published on November 7, they ask the European institutions to “reject the agreement in its current form”.

To keep them waiting, the farmers of Haute-Garonne announced that they did not intend to block the roads or cause chaos on the main roads, as was the case a year ago, but to make themselves heard.
