The General Directorate of National Security denied on Monday that a police officer had “slapped a teacher” during a demonstration that the management described as “unauthorized”.
In a press release published on its Facebook page, the administration adds that “the police officer only pushed the teacher after the latter attempted to cross a security barrier in order to free his colleague arrested by the judicial police.”
The administration attached a “video recording” documenting the incident, noting that the ministries of interior, decentralization and local development and the ministry of education and education system reform formed a committee to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
The statement said the teacher confirmed, during his testimony before the commission, that he “did not claim or state that the officer slapped him, instead confirming that the officer did not slap him.”
The incident of slapping a protesting teacher in front of the presidential palace a few days ago by a police officer sparked widespread controversy on social media.
After this information circulated, the Minister of Education and Education Reform expressed sympathy for the slapped teacher, and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the slapping. incident.
