Death of Ibrahima Barrie: two police officers found guilty of failure to assist a person in danger

Two police officers were found guilty of failing to assist a person in danger following the death of a 23-year-old man in a cell in January 2021.

The 23-year-old young man was arrested while filming a police intervention in the Gare du Nord district. While the patrol wanted to check him, he fled.

Then arrested by the police, he died following a heart attack which occurred while he was in detention on January 9, 2021 in a police station in the Brussels-North police zone. He remained in pain for several minutes before being rescued by one of the police officers present. He was taken to hospital where he died.

For Me Alexis Deswaef, the lawyer for Ibrahima Barrie’s family, the death of the young man in the cell is manslaughter due to lack of foresight and precaution.

The King’s prosecutor had, for his part, requested the acquittal of two of the four police officers prosecuted before the Brussels criminal court. He also ruled inadmissible the summons to appear in court for the two other agents. The trial is particularly closely followed.
