La Vilaine has come out of her bed several times in recent years in Pont-Réan. On the Guichen bank, but also on the Bruz bank. The few houses on Chemin des Balluds were among the first affected.
The three floods, which remain in the collective memory, are those of January 1995, December 1999 and especially January 2001. With 4.07 m measured at the level of the bridge, the level remained above the serious overflow level for three days . 120 homes and around twenty shops and businesses were affected, as were the medical office on rue de Louvain and the Sainte-Marie school. Several streets were inaccessible.
For comparison, we measured 3.52 m in 1995, 3.77 m in 1999 and 2.90 m in 2008. Water enters the bakery from 3.10 m and rue de Louvain is affected from 2.80 m. Thérèse Guillet, the former owner of the Grand Hôtel, located on the banks of the river, remembers being touched by the solidarity of her customers: For the transition to the year 2000, water had invaded part of the rooms. We had to reduce the number of guests by half; but it was the best New Year’s Eve!
