what is this phenomenon responsible for this week’s weather?

After a few days of mild weather, the rain and wind are returning this week to . The consequence of a very dynamic jet stream, a well-known phenomenon which causes bad weather and gusts.

A phenomenon that explains changes in the sky. While precipitation was rare at the end of autumn, it should return this week according to Météo-France forecasts.

Indeed, according to the meteorological agency, gusts and rain will cover a large northern half of the country, starting this Tuesday, November 19. Still according to this same source, these variations are directly linked to the jet stream phenomenon or also called jet stream.

“The presence of jet streams is linked to a strong contrast in temperatures at mid-latitudes between the warm air of tropical latitudes on one side and the cold air of polar zones on the other. The wind speed in this jet stream is proportional to this temperature difference, according to the law of thermal wind,” indicates Météo-France regarding the jet stream. The strong altitude winds observed can also be explained by the rotation of the Earth on its axis.

The jet stream, a phenomenon responsible for storms?

Météo-France also warns of the consequences of the jet stream. In certain cases, this phenomenon can cause a lot of precipitation, even leading to the formation of storms.

“The position of an emerging depression in relation to the jet stream as well as its structure determine the formation of a storm. A depression evolves into a storm all the more easily if the jet stream winds are strong and if these winds are subject to significant variations (accelerations, decelerations, changes of direction),” the meteorological agency deciphered.

More generous skies and temperatures are expected this Wednesday, November 20, Météo-France predicts, before a major return of rain from Thursday.
