LThe fire at the Kennedy Tower in Liège has been brought under control, police reported on the night of Monday to Tuesday. The fire started around 2 p.m., causing the evacuation and rehousing of several dozen residents. An initial, provisional report shows one death, while 14 people were hospitalized, including two in absolute emergency.

During a press briefing held Tuesday morning, authorities indicated that three floors still needed to be searched. Two people are still at home, but their state of health is reassuring.

The Kennedy Bridge remains closed in the Longdoz direction, and it is still recommended to avoid the area.

Recall of facts

The fire, which first broke out in the cellars, spread throughout the afternoon to the entire height of the building via the technical shafts. Smoke was quickly seen in the upper floors of the building.

The municipal emergency plan was immediately activated by the City. Around seventy firefighters from Liège and Verviers, assisted by the Brussels and Antwerp emergency zones with their 60-metre ladders, mobilised on the Paul van Hoegaerden quay for many hours to bring residents to safety and fight the fire. Evacuations began around 4pm.

75 Liège police officers and 25 federal police officers were also deployed, while helicopters from Defense and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg intervened to evacuate residents stuck in their homes.
