Has the State of Senegal forced the hand of members of the National Consumer Council to accept a drop in the prices of certain consumer products?

According to the president of the National Federation of Bakers of Senegal (FNBS), the price of 190 g bread which goes from 175 to 150 FCFA is not their choice.

During the discussions, they asked that the State bear the reduction of 6,500 F CFA but the Government refused, arguing that it can only bear 4,000 F CFA on the price of wheat flour.

“We told them: ‘if you want a reduction of 25 CFA francs, you must at least lower the price of flour by 6,500 CFA francs. But the reduction only amounted to 4,000 CFA francs. So there is no consensus. But we have measured all the efforts that the State is making for a minimum subsidy of 160 million per day so that flour drops by 4,000 CFA francs. The State has decided and we are not going to oppose the State,” explains Amadou GAYE of the FNBS.

An opinion also shared by the president of the association of retail shopkeepers.

Please note that the new prices will come into effect this Monday, June 24. More than 1,000 volunteers and security forces will ensure that prices are respected.
