As COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan reaches its fifth day this Friday, the United Nations published a report pointing out methane emissions which continue to increase despite international commitments.
If this COP29 has the main objective this year to increase international funding to fight global warming, with money at the center of discussions, human emissions of greenhouse gases remain a major issue. And the report published by the UN this Friday, while a summit on greenhouse gases other than CO2 is underway in Baku, serves as a reminder. This highlights that while carbon dioxide is the best-known enemy in the fight against global warming, methane emissions due to human activities are responsible for around a third of it.

All the tools to tackle the problem exist. The United Nations has even set up a program to detect the largest leaks. Thanks to satellites, for example, 1,200 companies and governments have already been warned of significant plumes. Unfortunately, regret the authors of the report, only 1% of these alerts received an appropriate response.
