After a first edition in 1950, it has returned tirelessly every year since 1955. The Monaco Grand Prix is inseparable from the history of Formula 1, by its atypical layout, between the walls of the city-state, and by the glamor which surrounds the event between immense yachts and the presence of a plethora of stars.
If the action is often very (too) limited on the track due to the narrowness of the circuit which makes overtaking almost impossible, the Monaco Grand Prix remains the one that every driver absolutely wants to win at least once. The 20 gladiators who will compete next year can rest assured: they will still have many opportunities to try to put their name on the winners list of the event.
Monaco has a bright future in Formula 1
Because if the Monaco GP was once threatened with being removed from the calendar at least every other year, it was ultimately extended until 2031. The race in the Principality was also given a special place on the calendar: it will take place next year on the weekend of May 23 to 25 and will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first Formula 1 GP, contested on May 13, 1950 at Silverstone. In subsequent years, from 2026, the Monaco Grand Prix will take place exclusively every first full weekend of June.
“I am delighted that Formula 1 will continue to race in Monaco until 2031,” rejoices Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1. “The streets of Monte Carlo are unique and a famous part of Formula 1, and the Monaco Grand Prix remains a race that all drivers dream of winning. I would like to particularly thank HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, Michel Boeri, President of the Automobile Club of Monaco and all those involved in the extension of this important partnership.
“I would particularly like to thank HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, Stefano Domenicali and everyone involved in the extension of this contract.” added Michel Boeri, President of the Automobile Club of Monaco. “Signing this new agreement with the Formula One Group until 2031 not only confirms the strength of our relationship, but also reaffirms our commitment to providing all visitors with an unrivaled, first-class race weekend experience . The Monaco Grand Prix is the most important sporting event in the Principality and continues to attract hundreds of thousands of spectators to the Principality and millions of television viewers from around the world.”
Five drivers on the current grid have already managed to win in Monaco: Lewis Hamilton (2008, 2016, 2019), Max Verstappen (2021, 2023), Fernando Alonso (2006, 2007), Sergio Pérez (2022) and Charles Leclerc (2024). The record for success, however, belongs to Ayrton Senna, winner six times.
