The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on World Refugee Day:

“Last year, the world saw the largest increase in forced displacement ever seen. Indeed, more than 117 million people have fled their communities and thus lost their homes and their daily lives. Today, on World Refugee Day, we pay tribute to the strength and resilience of those seeking safety from war, conflict and persecution, and we reaffirm our commitment to them. protect.

“Last year, Canada resettled more than 51,000 refugees through federally sponsored, privately sponsored and mixed programs, including women and girls at risk, ethnic and religious minorities as well as as human rights defenders. Working in partnership with organizations like the Rainbow Refugee Society and Rainbow Railroad, we welcome 2SLGBTQI+ refugees to Canada because no one should live in fear because of the person they love.

“Our collective commitment to helping the most vulnerable and improving their lot will remain unwavering. As part of the Government of Canada’s 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan, we advocate for economic growth, family reunification and response to humanitarian crises. We are expanding the Economic Mobility Pathway Pilot Project, which helps refugees find work in Canada, and we want to make it permanent. Additionally, we are investing $75 million over six years to help countries in Latin America and the Caribbean access the resources they need to support refugees and respond to situations of forced displacement and irregular migration.

“On this World Refugee Day, I invite Canadians to celebrate the strengths and achievements of refugees. Canada is at its best when it helps those with the greatest needs, so let’s take action. »
