Moroccan researcher and art critic Abdellah Cheikh won the Sharjah Prize for Fine Arts Criticism (first place) for his study entitled “The Arab world in artistic orientalism: civilizational and aesthetic dimensions”.
This award, awarded by the Directorate of Cultural Affairs at the Sharjah Department of Culture, highlights the importance of artistic criticism in understanding cultural interactions.
The prize, which is in its 15th edition this year, focuses on the theme “The Arab world in artistic orientalism”. Second place went to the Egyptian Atef Saâd for his study on “The aesthetic and artistic vision of orientalist painters of equestrian scenes in Egypt in the 19th century”.
In a statement to the press on this occasion, Muhammad Ibrahim Al Qasir, Secretary General of the award sponsored by Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, Governor of Sharjah, highlighted that this distinction “established a culture of specialized criticism, the first of its kind in the field of visual arts in the Arab world.”
In addition to Morocco, researchers from several countries were in the running for this prize, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.
