Thanks to an equalizer from Luka Jovic’s header, Serbia saved the point in the draw against Slovenia (1-1) in the very last seconds on Thursday in Munich, the two countries maintaining their chances of qualifying for Euro 2024 .

Slovenia concedes the second draw of its tournament in Germany after the one won against Denmark five days ago. She will have to take at least a point against England, one of the tournament favorites, on Tuesday in Cologne to hope to qualify for the knockout stage of the Euro for the first time.

For its part, Serbia, beaten by England (1-0) for its entry into the running, was on the edge of the precipice, but ultimately keeps its chances of seeing the round of 16, before challenging Denmark, still in Munich , in five days.

A scoring side

In stifling 27 degree heat, Slovenia and Serbia both hit the posts, Timi Elsnik for the Slovenes on the post in the first half and Aleksandar Mitrovic for the Serbs in the second half on the crossbar.

In a balanced match, the opening score for Slovenia did not come from RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, much more discreet than against Denmark, but from Celje’s right side Zan Karnicnik at the start of the twenty last minutes.

The defender collected the ball in front of his penalty area, launched the counterattack and found himself at the far post to deceive Predrag Rajkovic. Karnicnik is the second Slovenian full-back to score for his selection, since it was Erik Janza who equalized in the second half against Denmark.

At the end

In this Balkan duel, a little more tense on the pitch and in the stands (a few plastic glasses were thrown from the Slovenian stands towards the Serbian goalkeeper and vice versa from the Serbian stands towards the Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak) at the end of the match, the equalization came at the end of added time (95th).

On a corner for Serbia, Luka Jovic managed to slip between Jaka Bijol and Karnicnik to head the ball and put it out of Oblak’s reach. The referee immediately whistled the end of the match, while two smoke bombs landed on the pitch.
