A Chinese nuclear submarine worries the USA and its allies – La Nouvelle Tribune

The tensions between UNITED STATES and the Chine, two global superpowers, have always been fueled by ideological, economic and security differences. Recently, these tensions have increased with the appearance of a Chinese nuclear submarine in the Strait of Taiwan, a major geostrategic hotspot. This area, considered a red line for both nations, has seen an increase in military activities, thus accentuating international concerns. The Taiwan Strait, located between China and Taiwan, is seen by Beijing as inalienable territory, while the United States firmly supports Taiwan in its aspiration to democracy and self-determination. This latest incident once again highlights the potential escalation of confrontation between the United States, its allies, and the Chine.

Early Tuesday morning, a Chinese type submarine 094 Jin, equipped with ballistic missiles, surfaced in the Taiwan Strait, an unusual event that did not fail to attract global attention. Observed by Taiwanese fishermen, this submarine, which has the capacity to launch nuclear missiles, reinforces fears of a military escalation in the region. The submarine’s appearance is part of a series of recent People’s Liberation Army activities around Taiwan, which also include intensive air and sea movements.

The incident prompted Taiwan’s Defense Ministry to reassure the public and international observers that it had the situation under control. Taiwanese media reported that the appearance of the submarine could be linked to a transit to a Chinese port, although no technical problems have been confirmed despite speculation. However, the visibility of this submarine on the surface could be explained by the shallow depth of the strait, making submerged navigation risky for a vessel of this size.

At the same time, the People’s Liberation Army’s submarine fleet is growing rapidly, with the announced introduction of Type 096 submarines and missiles JL-3, intended to strengthen China’s nuclear deterrence. This underscores the growing strategic importance Beijing places on its underwater capabilities, particularly in the contested waters bordering Taiwan.

Taiwan’s reaction was not long in coming. Taiwan’s defense minister stressed the need to remain vigilant in the face of continued threats from China, while calling for calm management of tensions. The regular presence of Chinese submarines in the strait raises questions about Beijing’s intentions and the implications for regional security.

This incident with the Chinese submarine only exacerbates existing tensions and highlights the complexity of the issues in the Taiwan Strait. As China continues to build its military capabilities, the United States and its allies remain cautiously on guard, aware that the slightest spark could inflame an already heavily militarized region. The Taiwan Strait therefore remains a crucial barometer of Sino-US relations, with potential implications far beyond its turbulent waters.
