Mitchell Cup: the Rouge et Or are more wary than ever of turnovers

If ball protection has been the priority for the Rouge et Or since returning to work last January, this aspect will take on even greater importance at the Mitchell Cup.

Western champions, the Regina Rams managed no less than four interceptions in their 19-14 Hardy Cup victory against the Saskatchewan Huskies, in addition to causing five fumbles, two of which they recovered.

They notably achieved the winning touchdown on a 45-yard interception return from defensive back Carson Sombach. Choice of the Calgary Stampeders in the last draft, his brother Jackson also committed a theft.

“Our focus has been on turnovers since this winter, but this will be even greater against an opponent whose trademark is that,” explained quarterback Arnaud Desjardins. The Rams are banking on a big defensive front with very athletic defensive backs.”

“Their defensive schemes are quite different from those of Montreal, to pursue the pivot of 4e year, but they have good athletes. They are long and physical on the front.”

Jackson Sombach savored the last game, he who declined a contract offer from the Stampeders in order to return one last season in the university ranks. “I was excited for my brother to throw an interception and return it for a touchdown. I wanted to end my career on a good note after presenting a record of one victory and seven losses in 2023, hence my decision to come back. I saw the Rouge et Or on television and I faced several players at the Canada Cup (Canadian U-19 championship).”

Similarities with 2022

Desjardins identifies common points with the 2022 edition which won the Vanier Cup in London. “As in 2022, our attack is explosive and dynamic,” he stressed. We are also banking on a top receiver and our defense is very dominant. We present a team that is even more united than in 2022 and we are ready. We have everything we need to get to the Vanier Cup. After a difficult season last year, it would be quite a reward and it would silence the critics.

During the last Vanier Cup victory, it was slotback Kevin Mital who stood out while Olivier Cool is having an incredible season this year. The Nomades de product continued his momentum in the playoffs and has 17 receptions for 319 yards and three touchdowns in two games.

On a personal level, however, Desjardins notes an important difference. “In 2022, I followed the older ones while this year it is up to me to show the way,” he explained. We have to make sure we don’t let ourselves be bothered by the travel and other distractions surrounding the match.

Exemple de leadership

This leadership, Justin Éthier noted with pleasure at the half break of the Dunsmore Cup against the Carabins of the University of Montreal. “On the interception, Arnaud did not make a good decision and he accepted his mistake by apologizing to his teammates at the break,” said the offensive coordinator. I have witnessed his leadership. This type of decision is going to happen, but you have to not let it affect you and move on to the next play. That’s what he did.”
