Donald Trump returns to the White House: what will be the impact on the war in Ukraine?

Donald Trump has regularly criticized American military aid provided to Ukraine in the conflict between it and Russia, but could the Republican’s return to power change the relationship between the two countries?

According to Pierre Binette, professor and specialist in international relations, there is no doubt that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is not reassured by the upcoming return of Donald Trump to the White House.

“Donald Trump has always prioritized and will continue to prioritize the United States-Asia axis over the United States-Europe,” he said in an interview with LCN on Tuesday.

“It must be understood that from Donald Trump’s perspective, the defense of Ukraine’s interests must be the business of European countries and much less of the United States and he widely criticized the military aid granted to Ukraine , or $64 billion so far,” he explained.

While it is possible to expect cuts in military aid, the 47e American president will not be able to “drop everything”, judges the expert.

“Donald Trump often puts on a show of smoke and mirrors, but in reality he must still take into consideration realities that are restrictive for him,” he stressed.

Thus, his first gesture in international politics cannot be that of giving a victory to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

«[Donald Trump] will try to bring the participants to the negotiating table, but before [d’y aller]we must ensure that there are possibilities for success, which will not be, for example, the complete defeat of Ukraine or the complete defeat of Vladimir Putin,” indicated Mr. Binette.

Regarding a possible call between the two presidents, the specialist believes that they would then have spoken of “possible meetings of officials” and that “it was not the time to put the cards on the table”.
