Anticipated legislative elections: François Fillon affirms that “the extreme left” must be “sanctioned by the ballot box”

In this troubled period within his political family, the right-wing baron speaks out. A few days before the first round of early legislative elections, former Prime Minister François Fillon slams the “extreme left” in an article published in Le Figaro this Tuesday. He asserts that “the extreme left which threatens national unity must be implacably punished at the ballot box. »

The former Prime Minister, awaiting his new trial, however, assures that he continues “to think that the extreme right, despite its change, is not capable of straightening out our country. »

“I remain convinced that our country needs a strong and free Republican right. Making your difference heard and fighting for national unity. I agree, this right, mine, is in the emergency room,” continues the unsuccessful candidate in the 2017 presidential election. “I support the difficult fight that its candidates will lead in the field of democratic ruin left by the outgoing majority,” he continues.

“Ends of the political spectrum”

According to him, the “French people opposed to the president’s policies have gradually taken refuge at the ends of the political spectrum” due to a lack of alternative on the right or the left. He deplores that the National Rally and La France insoumise “are now the main political forces in France”.

The former head of government (2007-2012) was indicted in a fictitious jobs affair and finally eliminated in the first round of the 2017 presidential election, before retiring from political life.

He was sentenced in 2020 to five years of imprisonment, two of which were suspended and three of which were suspended, a fine of 375,000 euros and ten years of ineligibility. The prison sentence was reduced on appeal in 2022, falling to four years, one of which is closed. On April 24, the Court of Cassation announced that François Fillon was definitively found guilty in this case but ordered a new trial concerning the sentences handed down against him, as well as damages.
