The carrying out of a diagnosis ahead of possible renovation work on the Sainte-Geneviève church in Héricy (Seine-et-Marne) reserved a surprise for the specialists who were in charge of it. While removing the lime covering the walls, they actually came across drawings that could date from the Middle Ages, says The Republic of Seine-et-Marne Sunday November 10.
Several engravings found
“We should not extrapolate from these discoveries”tempered Frédéric Jamet, deputy mayor. The elected official specified that one of the paintings, representing a silhouette, was on a pillar and that other sketches present on arches had been brought to light. Added to these discoveries, the experts’ observations led them to recommend implementing the renovation of the church.
The amount of the budget necessary for the restoration of the building built between the 12th centurye and the 16the centuries was estimated at 5.4 million euros, indicates the local media. Classified as a Historic Monument, the church should first have its waterproofing redone in order to stop infiltration damaging the premises. The masonry, electricity and heating should then be renovated.
