► Riyadh Summit: no peace without Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories

Leaders of Arab and Muslim countries meeting in Saudi Arabia on Monday called on Israel to completely withdraw from the Arab territories it occupies to achieve peace “global” in the Middle East.

“A just and comprehensive peace in the region (…) cannot be achieved without putting an end to the Israeli occupation of all the occupied territories” since 1967 – when Israel began occupying the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan – “and this in accordance with UN resolutions and the 2002 Arab peace plan”mentions the final declaration of the summit.

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas has urged Arab and Muslim countries to implement declarations made at their summit and force Israel to cease its ” assault “.

Summit participants also “firmly condemned” the actions of the Israeli army, described as “crime of genocide (…) particularly in the north of the Gaza Strip in recent weeks”where the Israeli army has been carrying out a deadly offensive since October 7.

They called on the international community to “prohibit the export or transfer of arms and ammunition to Israel” and condemned “the continued attacks by the Israeli authorities (…) against the UN”.

During a speech in Parliament, Bezalel Smotrich, Minister of Finance, also responsible for civil management in the West Bank, and therefore the settlements, affirmed that the “creation of a Palestinian state (…) would endanger the existence of the State of Israel”.

“The only way to eliminate this threat (…) is to apply Israeli sovereignty over the settlements of Judea and Samaria”said Bezalel Smotrich, using the name that Israelis give to the West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.

Apart from annexed East Jerusalem, more than 490,000 Israelis live in the West Bank, in settlements that the UN considers illegal under international law, among 3 million Palestinians.
