A knife attack left five injured, two of them serious, Monday morning in a grocery store in Metz, in Moselle. The victims are now “out of danger” indicates the prosecution, but the perpetrators are still on the run. The Metz public prosecutor ruled out the terrorist motive; it was more likely a settling of scores.

The grocery store targeted on Saturday is located on the ground floor of one of the many building blocks in this priority district of Borny, in Metz. Police cordons still demarcate the area of the knife attack on Tuesday morning. Célia lives just above this local business, run by Afghans. “It’s shocking because in general, it’s calm,” says the resident.

“There have never been any big problems with murder here. Especially since the Afghans are super nice, respectful. They hold the door for us, help us carry the groceries. Knowing that they are being attacked is unfortunate “, continues Célia.

An investigation into attempted murder opened

Several residents, however, describe a neighborhood with a tense climate. “Violence, drug trafficking, it happens every day,” they confide. Souleymane, a shopkeeper near the attacked grocery store, is exasperated: “Borny is too dangerous a neighborhood, because people sell drugs. There are always lots of brothels here.”

“The police are not present enough” in the neighborhood, regrets another resident. He fears reprisals for this attack in the coming days, which would be a possible settling of scores, against a backdrop of extortion. An investigation into attempted murder was opened by the Metz judicial police.
