Riley Phillips was found guilty by a jury of the second-degree murder of Joedin Leger.
The verdict came Saturday afternoon following a seven-week trial held at the Court of King’s Bench in Moncton.
The jury, made up of twelve people, began deliberating Thursday afternoon after receiving instructions from Judge Robert Dysart.
The charge stems from an incident that occurred on April 25, 2022, outside a residence on Logan Lane in Moncton.
Police responded to the residence early in the morning after receiving reports of shots fired. She found Joedin Leger, 18, suffering from a gunshot wound. He later succumbed to his injuries.
The RCMP investigation determined that the young man had been the victim of a murder.
During the investigation, police learned that a car stopped in front of the residence, and that four people got out of the car, then approached the house. Several shots were fired, then the suspects got back into the vehicle.
Riley Phillips will return to court next February to receive his sentence.
The individual will automatically be sentenced to life in prison. The judge will, however, have to determine the length of incarceration before he is eligible for parole.
The length of this sentence varies between 10 and 25 years.
