Cannes Lérins mobilizes owners to prevent flooding

Thus, in order to ensure that these plots are maintained throughout the living area – including on private property – the Cannes metropolitan area applies general interest declaration procedures. This system makes it possible to raise awareness and make individuals responsible for the risk of flooding. 70% of rivers and valleys are located in private domain.

The owners therefore have the obligation each year to carry out the maintenance of the vegetation, the removal of natural and anthropogenic ice jams, as well as the cleaning of sediments which can accumulate and consequently aggravate the risk of overflow in the valley. or watercourse that crosses his land.

11 valleys in the communes of Cannes and Cannet are concerned, i.e. 565 private plots:

  • Le Mauvarre;
  • Font de Veyre;
  • Pierre Longue;
  • Saint Georges ;
  • Provençal;
  • La Baume;
  • Chestnut;
  • California;
  • Cros Vieil;
  • Beautiful desert;
  • Riou

In the event of lack of maintenance, the Cannes Lérins Agglomeration replaces the owners at their expense.

Cannes Lérins – Flood prevention

On Wednesday July 19, 2023, Cannes recorded a heat record set at 39.2°C. After having initiated its Drought Plan, the Cannes Town Hall – in close collaboration with the Cannes Lérins Agglomeration – is mobilizing strongly to anticipate potential floods as a result of these heatwave periods.

The significant heat of the summer period is conducive to the development of violent storms. This is why municipal and intercommunal services are strengthening their vigilance and intervening in the most risky sectors. We regularly carry out cleaning actions in our living area to remove obstacles to the proper flow of water and we do this systematically after each rainy episode. It is also crucial that individuals maintain their land adjacent to watercourses to maintain the effectiveness of our interventions. If we cannot prevent further flooding from occurring, we are doing everything we can to reduce the consequences.”
David Lisnard, mayor of Cannes and president of the Cannes Lérins Agglomeration
