The mayor, Alain Ferrand, received the information within the same deadlines. Reached by telephone, the first magistrate released barely a week after six months of pre-trial detention and prohibited from going to the town of Barcarès, testifies: “We are unfortunately experiencing a tragedy… It’s a disaster! I experience this misfortune from a distance with the firefighters with whom I was in contact in the middle of the night and who put in considerable resources. But with the intervention time and the deployment of resources, the tramontane, wooden structures were devastated by the flames“.

It’s unbearable and horrible

Kept away, the mayor is all the more affected. “It’s unbearable and horrible. Beyond all the economic, social and collateral consequences of this disaster, I am thinking of all my teams who, given my imposed absence, had mobilized tirelessly to organize this edition which promised to be exceptional. I feel pain and also immeasurable anger not being able to help and support the municipal teams, all the people impacted, businesses, artisan traders directly“.

What future for this edition of the Barcarès Christmas Village which was to open in just four days, this Friday, November 15, 2024? A decision should be taken shortly, based on the assessment of the extent of the damage.
