A fire broke out during the night of Sunday 10 to Monday 11 November 2024 in the Barcarès Christmas market which was preparing its upcoming opening.

The alert was given to the emergency services during the night from Sunday to Monday around 4:30 a.m. A fire broke out within the facilities of the Barcarès Christmas village, the seaside resort's flagship event.

According to initial information, the flames spread particularly to the foot of Lydia and destroyed seven chalets as well as three of the caissons supporting the structures. Around twenty gas cylinders present on the site were also impacted, 4 of which exploded under the effect of the heat. Explosions being heard by witnesses nearby. Around sixty firefighters, four pump trucks, two large capacity tankers and support resources were immediately dispatched to the scene.

At 7:30 a.m. this Monday morning, the fire was contained and any risk of spread was eliminated. No injuries were reported. The origin of the incident remains unknown at this time. An investigation was to be opened by the gendarmerie services.
