During a final hour of play during which there were more errors than brilliant shots, DeChambeau capped off an exciting week by leaving the bunker a distance of 55 yards and scoring a short par to hand over a card of 71 (plus-1).

Payne Stewart made a par putt from 15 feet on the final hole in 1999, during the first showing of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. He then beat Phil Mickelson by a blow.

Trying to end a 10-year drought without a major tournament victory, McIlroy led by two shots while sitting on 14e mound.

The Northern Irishman was leading by a stroke when he missed a putt by just over two feet for par at the 16the pennant. Then he missed a putt from less than four feet for par on the 18th.e hole.

From the official scorer’s room, McIlroy watched DeChambeau get out of a bad position after his tee shot at the 18e hole and leave the bunker to achieve the victorious roll.

DeChambeau won the United States Open by six strokes on the Winged Foot Golf Club course in 2020.
