Ronald Koeman wanted to see his team kill the match: “We have to be more efficient”

Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman was not entirely satisfied on Sunday after his team’s narrow victory against Poland (2-1) in their first Euro match in Germany. “We played very well in the first hour, but then we have to lead 3-1 or 4-1,” he said in the press conference held shortly after the match. “At that time, the game should be played.”

“We need to be more efficient,” Koeman said, pointing to the upcoming Group D matches against France and Austria. The coach was especially relieved when Wout Weghorst scored the decisive goal two minutes after coming on. “It’s one of his qualities. He adds something to our game. Wout was very disappointed when I told him that ‘He wouldn’t start against Poland, but he got over that disappointment.’

Polish coach Michal Probierz is not giving up either and wants to do everything to win the two remaining matches in Group D. “I think we can become stronger during the tournament. We played aggressively, almost the opponent and we were well organized,” he declared at the UEFA microphone. “I told the players that we gave the ball away too quickly at times and put too little forward pressure.”
