Across the Channel, it is one of the most anticipated events of the year. This Saturday June 15 took place “Trooping the Color“, a ceremony whose name can be translated into French as “Salute to colors” Or “Salute to the flag“. This consists of a military parade intended to celebrate the birthday of the Anglo-Saxon sovereigns. Thus, the monarch celebrates his birthday twice a year. Charles III, crowned since September 2022, is therefore, for the second time, at the center of this celebration.

While on horseback last year, Elizabeth II’s son showed up in a carriage accompanied by Queen Camilla. A choice certainly linked to his state of health, since the King of the United Kingdom is currently battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy treatment. However, the parade did not go off without incident and the king was directly confronted by anti-monarchy demonstrators.

“Down with the king” shout anti-monarchy activists

As the royal couple’s carriage advanced in the military procession, they could see anti-monarchy activists. Massed against the barriers despite the rain near Buckingham Palace, activists criticizing the British crown tackled signs and yellow flags. Short, punchy slogans are visible from afar: “Not my king“(translation: Not my king), “Down with the crown” (translation: Down with the crown). As part of the Republic movement, they chanted slogans: “Down with the king“.

Earlier, the group had invited Anglo-Saxon citizens to join them : “it’s a great day to protest, join us outside Buckingham Palace. Republic has previously taken a stand at major royal events, including the king’s coronation last year, during which several activists were arrested. She is in favor of removing the monarch and replacing him with an elected head of state. The demonstration was authorized by Scotland Yard between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., although without amplified sound.
