American actor Tony Todd has died at his home in Los Angeles, his spokesperson announced to the specialized press.
To his credit? More than 245 appearances on screen, whether in cinema or television.
Popularized by the horror film “Candyman” in the 1990s, he was also one of the faces of the “Final Destination” saga.
It terrorized a legion of horror movie fans. Candyman star Tony Todd died on November 6 at his home in Los Angeles. The announcement was made two days later by its spokesperson to the American press including Variety (new window), Deadline (new window) and TMZ (new window). The causes of death of the 69-year-old actor have not been specified. Born in Washington DC in 1954, he studied theater at the Conservatory before moving into cinema. One of his first roles took him in front of Oliver Stone's camera in the middle of the Vietnam War in the now cult Platoonwon the Oscar for best film.
A prolific career followed with more than 245 roles, on the big and small screen. Tony Todd appeared in the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, X-Files: On the Borders of Reality, New York: Judicial Police, Beverly Hills, Charmed 24 Hours Chrono and even The Young and the Restless. The actor will remain associated with the horror genre, of which he was one of the most notable faces. He is the first to have embodied Candymanthe evil spirit carrying a hook in one hand, in 1992. A character that he will reprise three times, including a last time in the 2021 remake with Yahya Abdul Mateen Il.
“There has to be something appealing about the character that makes people want to support him, but at the same time, they have to feel repulsed by the idea. Personally, for every film I make, I create a story for all my tortured characters and my heroes”he told Deadline two years ago. In the credits of four films in the saga Destination Finalehe had also played in The Crow and opposite Sean Connery in Rock. Around ten of his projects are currently in post-production.
