Epidaure, the Prevention Department of the Montpellier Cancer Institute, closed the “1,2,3 Soleil” sun risk prevention campaign this Friday, June 14, by organizing the 27th edition of the Epidauries du Soleil.

Four randomly selected classes met in Epidaurus this Friday for the 27th edition of the “Epidauries of the Sun”, during which 104 children took part in fun and scientific workshops to experience the harmful effects of the sun.

More effective dry clothes

“Dry clothing, even light, filters UV rays and is the best protection against the sun,” explains dermatologist Candice Lesage to a class of captivated primaries. “A wet t-shirt protects much less well!”

“The best thing is not to expose yourself at all, during the hottest hours, between noon and 4 p.m., when the UV index announced by the weather forecast can reach up to 18,” recalls Jean-Louis Roumégas, head of the National Education Health Prevention Resource Center within Epidaure, prevention department of the Montpellier Cancer Institute. Of course, sunglasses are essential!

Tanning, synonymous with beauty and good health

Always synonymous with beauty and good health, tanning, the result of overexposure, is one of the risk factors for skin cancers (melanomas and carcinomas), in constant increase since the 1980s. In 2018, it is estimated that melanoma affected 15,500 people and caused 1,980 deaths. “2/3 are linked to excessive and intense exposure during childhood.”
