A fire completely destroyed a six-unit building in the Whisseltown area of Brownsburg-Chatham on November 4. Even though there were no injuries, 14 people now find themselves on the street.
Brownsburg-Chatham firefighters were called to the scene of a fire on Canton Road, in the Whisseltown area, at 8:44 a.m. on the morning of November 4. According to information from the Fire Safety Service, the flames started in the structure of the building, between the first and second floors, before quickly spreading to the rest of the building.
Arriving on site, firefighters evacuated the six homes in the building. 14 people, including three toddlers aged 2 and 3, were evacuated, in addition to a few pets. Although some animals could not be saved, there were no injuries, with the exception of a firefighter, injured by a dog he was trying to save.
Around fifty firefighters battled the flames for many hours. The fire safety services of Lachute, Saint-André-d’Argenteuil, Gore, Grenville, Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, Mirabel and Wentworth-Nord came to lend a hand to their colleagues from Brownsburg-Chatham. The operation ended at 7:29 p.m. the same day.
If the cause of the flames is currently still unknown, the criminal hypothesis has officially been ruled out.
According to information from the Brownsburg-Chatham fire department, the tenants of only one of the six homes were insured. All the evacuated people were taken care of by the Red Cross while the Argenteuil Regional Housing Office is involved in temporarily rehousing the victims.
