The mayors of France and the Regions are standing up against the budget cuts planned by the State. According to “Le Parisien”, the Prime Minister is taking up the matter to calm anger and renew dialogue.
Communities, the first victims of the wind of budgetary austerity blown by the government? The Association of Mayors of France (AMF) and the Regions are furious at the savings requested by the State, according to The Parisian. With the approach of the congresses of associations of elected officials, the rumble is only growing. According to François Sauvadet (UDI), president of the Association of Departments of France (ADF), the departments are “asphyxiated”. David Lisnard (LR), president of the AMF, warned: “If we want to avoid the next Yellow Vests wearing tricolor scarves, we will have to rediscover the sense of decentralization, solidarity, public performance and trust in mayors“.
Its number 2, André Laignel (PS), estimates that the effort requested from communities actually amounts to 11 billion euros, more than double the 5 billion announced by the government. “If the announced measures are taken, 80% of departments will find themselves bankrupt. (…) We must face the explosion of social spending and the fall in revenue. In this context, an incomprehensible effort is imposed on us“.
Michel Barnier at the front
Faced with this growing anger from local authorities, Michel Barnier decided to take up the matter. The Prime Minister will attend the ADF and AMF congresses. “It’s marked with a white cross in his diary. He should make announcements,” slips an advisor. At the same time, the tenant of Matignon is increasing the number of meetings.
François Sauvadet is thus received this Friday, November 8 by Michel Barnier. Before him, David Lisnard and Renaud Muselier also spoke with the Prime Minister, and with Catherine Vautrin (Partnership with the territories) and Laurent Saint-Martin (Budget).
