Conner Rousseau: “Unlikely for Vooruit to participate in a federal government”

Conner Rousseau notes that the MR, Les Engagés, the N-VA and the CD&V turned towards each other shortly after Sunday’s federal and regional elections. But according to him, these four parties have little in common with the way Vooruit wants to manage the country. “In recent years, we have focused on defending purchasing power and investing in health care. Voters thanked us for that.”

Rousseau targets the savings proposals put forward by the MR and the N-VA during the electoral campaign while large assets would be preserved. “There is little chance that we will participate in that,” he replies. “If they call us to save 5 billion euros in health care, it’s not even worth it.” The socialist refuses to enter into a logic of savings “for which the average Flemish person would pay the full price” and which would not include the big fortunes.

There is a greater chance of seeing his party in a Flemish coalition with the N-VA and the CD&V, he believes. But he is waiting for a signal: the socialists are demanding a “starting note” from Flemish informant Bart De Wever because, in their eyes, the next Flemish government will have to pursue “another policy” than the previous one, more social.
