We see a lot of “fake news” flourishing on Facebook which advises you to copy and paste a message to protect your data on the network. They are almost all false. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do…

You certainly haven’t missed the media surge on artificial intelligence, and neither has Meta. The company is also in the process of training its own in-house AI, and for that, it needs data… Now, that’s good, because the social network Facebook and its little brother Instagram are filled with the personal data of its users! To do this, all you need to do is make a small change in the platform’s privacy policy…

So of course, Meta cannot use all the information you use on the social network: for example, it cannot attack your private data, such as the content of your conversations with your friends, but cannot limit itself to than public data, which in itself is quite logical.

But that’s not all, because fortunately, it is entirely possible to prevent the collection of your data to feed Meta’s AI if you don’t want it to use your vacation photos to generate new, strangely similar images.

However, you will have to hurry, because in Meta’s vision, your non-action before the fateful date of June 26 will be considered as consent to the sharing of your data.

However, there is no need to copy and paste a message into your news feed, as you have surely seen in one of the thousands of conspiracy-oriented posts lying around on the platform. Facebook has provided you with a much more traditional method to object to the harvesting of your personal data: a form.

But that’s not all, because in addition to having to fill out said form, you will have to justify yourself to the platform. And here, we must recognize that it is still very practical to be a Belgian and European citizen, because the laws of the two political entities offer a justification found in the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) as well as in its Belgian equivalent. All you need to do is copy a link, for example, to the Data Protection Authority website: Citizen home page | Data Protection Authority (autoriteprotectiondonnees.be), which you may adorn with a small text explaining that you wish to protect your data under the regulations in force in Belgium.
