Cycling: “Inconceivable that it cannot take place”… A Dutch classic could be canceled in 2025 because of NATO

the essential
The prestigious Amstel Gold Race may not take place in 2025 due to a lack of police officers. The Dutch Parliament announced that the police would not be able to ensure security.

NATO summit could lead to cancellation of Amstel Gold Race. The link may seem unwelcome but it is indeed the case. This Thursday, November 28, the Parliament of the Netherlands announced that the police would not be able to ensure the security of all races organized in the country between January 1 and August 31, 2025.

Indeed, the police will be mobilized by the NATO summit, scheduled for June 24 and 25 in The Hague. The famous Ardennes classic, which generally takes place in April, would therefore be impacted and could be removed from the 2025 calendar.

“Bitter and disappointing”

A possibility deplored by the Dutch cycling federation (KNWU). “It is bitter and disappointing to note that the two days of the NATO summit resulted in an absence of motorcycle police during cycling races for at least eight months, or almost the entire cycling season,” regretted the instance in a press release.

MP Inge van Dijk @i_dijk has submitted an amendment to release the necessary financial resources for the KNWU, for the national directive on civilian motor traffic controllers for cycling races. https://t.co/ECoT9Hdtoo
