Volodymyr Zelensky hopes Donald Trump will help Ukraine achieve a 'just peace'

“An impressive victory“. Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Donald Trump this Wednesday, re-elected for a second term at the White House. “I appreciate the President's commitment to the 'peace through strength' approach to world affairs. This is exactly the principle that can concretely bring Ukraine closer to a just peace.” reacted the Ukrainian president, while the American billionaire repeatedly repeats that he can impose peace in Ukraine in 24 hours… but without ever explaining how.

In Ukraine, the fear is that of being abandoned in the open countryside by the Americans. However, there has yet been no official reaction on the specific subject of weapons or even military aid. The soldiers of an assault brigade who had just returned from the front, in the Donetsk region, told us that deep down, they don't care what happens in the United States. For them, the main concern is what is happening on the ground. And in the short term, for them, it doesn’t change anything. However, on the front, it's getting worse and worse, observed one of them, his face closed.

A re-election which had been anticipated by kyiv

The last time Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky saw each other was at the end of September, in New York. Obviously, the Ukrainian administration anticipated the re-election of the American. Obviously, contacts were made and maintained. And even if the coming to power of Donald Trump raises a lot of questions here and arouses fear, kyiv will have to deal with him anyway.

In recent days, advisors to President Zelensky told the foreign press that once in power, Donald Trump could act differently from what he has promised so far and that he will realize that he cannot not appear weak in front of Vladimir Putin before the eyes of the whole world and that from there he could provide more aid to Ukraine.
