“It’s my version” assures the director, who was able to choose the editing, without giving anything away to the studio.
No, there will not be a long version of Gladiator II or Director's Cut. And for good reason, Ridley Scott confirms having had the last word on his film against the Paramount studio. The sequel carried by Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington is totally his.
“I won the right to have the final cut, my final version of the film”, announces Ridley Scott to Collider, specifying immediately that “non” there will be no other version of the film after its cinema release, as had been the case for a certain number of his previous films, and more recently for Napoleon (2023).
“As it was me who made this final edit, it’s my version that comes out and therefore I will have to take responsibility. It’s my version.”
The filmmaker immediately specifies that he begins “to be edited while the film is being shot. I don't wait until the end to start cutting. I don't do the filming and then the editing. That would take too long. I cut as I go. And I even believe that It’s good to edit as you go because it allows you to see how we’re doing in real time, how everyone behaves on set.”
Gladiator 2 will already be long, since the film will last 2h28, almost as much as the first film. Released in cinemas in France on November 13.
