From the opening of the polling stations in the early morning to the announcement of the results in the evening, including reports in several other countries, follow the vote to designate the deputies of the European Parliament this Sunday, June 9.

In summary :

– The 49.5 million French people registered on the electoral lists for these European elections have the choice between 38 lists in the voting booth this Sunday, June 3. Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. in mainland France and will close at 6 p.m., or 8 p.m. in large cities.

– The aim of the ballot is to elect the 720 deputies of the European Parliament, including 81 for France. It is the only institution whose elected officials are designated by universal suffrage by the voters of the 27 member states.

Voting under close surveillance in New Caledonia. On the Pacific archipelago still in the grip of high tensions, the vote is taking place under high security, three and a half weeks after the start of the riots following the vote on government reform on the electorate. “92% of polling stations” were able to open at 7 a.m. local (10 p.m. Saturday in Paris), according to the High Commission of the Republic. At noon local time, the participation rate was up very slightly compared to the 2019 vote (8.81% compared to 8.13%).

But actually, how much does a MEP earn? Responsible in part for voting on legal texts, MEPs do not receive a salary but an “allowance”, equivalent to 38.5% of the basic remuneration of a judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union. As of July 1, and after deduction of social security contributions and European taxes, this compensation amounts to 7,853.89 euros. For comparison, a French deputy who sits in the National Assembly receives a net salary of 5,953.34 euros. Read here.

The polling stations will open. As is already the case for some French overseas people, mainland voters can access the polls from 8 a.m. It is possible to present an identity card, passport or any other valid document stipulated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its site. The electoral card, on which the address of your polling station appears, is however optional in order to be able to vote. And to find your polling station, the Ministry of the Interior offers a dedicated page. They will close at 6 p.m., or 8 p.m. in major cities.
