“I experienced what police officers experience daily”: the mayor of Saint-Gilles reacts after his attack

Jean Spinette (PS), mayor of Saint-Gilles, was attacked on Saturday morning in his town. The mayor is unhurt, indicated the Brussels Midi local police zone (Anderlecht, Saint-Gilles, Forest). According to the mayor, the attack was not motivated by political reasons, but was due to a confrontation with a suspected drug addict and dealer who was causing nuisance.

The incident occurred on the Saint-Gilles square around 10:45 a.m. A person attacked the mayor and tried to punch him several times. “The mayor was able to avoid him and the attacker fled,” the police said. “We are looking for this person.”

“I experienced up close what the police officers in our area experience on a daily basis,” declared Mayor Jean Spinette. “I was at the Saturday market talking to a young family who were concerned about the presence of drug dealers in their daycare when a man came up, butted into the conversation and told us to we go away. As he was scaring the young child in the family, I asked him to go away, to which he replied that he was the boss. »

The mayor then moved away from the man, who became aggressive and tried to hit him several times. “I managed to repel his blows, after which he fled,” continues Jean Spinette. “I followed him to Place Jacques Franck while calling the police. There he tried to speak to people he apparently knew. The police quickly went to the scene but he had already disappeared. »

According to the mayor, he was a drug user and trafficker, perhaps under the influence of alcohol.
