The quest for their origins began a whole new chapter on Saturday for thousands of adopted Quebecers.

Indeed, the entry into force of significant changes to the confidentiality surrounding adoption means that people put up for adoption as children can now know the identity of their biological parents, even if they have refused that this information be disclosed.

However, no meeting can be forced between an adopted person and their parents.

The Department of Health and Human Services expects to receive thousands of applications over the coming months.

The president of the Retrouvailles movement, Caroline Fortin, also warns that people who fill out an application will have to wait a little.

“I would like to tell people to be patient a little longer and to understand the speakers […] who will be overwhelmed. They are doing the best they can, they have added staff and things should go very well, but we have to expect delays,” she told TVA Nouvelles.
