On June 5, Netflix added Under the Seine to its catalog. Bad luck, the latest feature film by Xavier Gens did not receive a very warm welcome from subscribers. Critics have been particularly harsh towards the drama.
“But what did Bérénice Bejo come to do in this mess? The Caesar-winning actress from The Artist seems lost in this nonsense. His character, like the others, is full of clichés. The young environmental activist, obviously a lesbian, and her comrades are wearing piercings, dyed blue hair and Peruvian hats. Necessarily“, wrote The Parisian.
“Turnip that hits the bottomUnder the Seine, the new Netflix release featuring a mutant shark in the waters of the Seine, multiplies the clichés and offers a genre film with many flaws which can only shine through second or even third degree viewing“, added Les Echos
Et Southwest to add: “A highly anticipated disaster film but without any flavor.” Clear opinions which have obviously not tarnished the reputation of the film.
“Anne Hidalgo asked me to jump with her”
On the video-on-demand service at Red N, Under the Seine met with immense success. A source of pride for Bérénice Bejo, the interpreter of Sophia.
“It is the most viewed French film of all time on Netflix and the second in English“, she recently confided in the columns of La Tribune Sunday before announcing the filming ofa second part in 2025.
During her interview with our colleagues, the 48-year-old actress shared a funny anecdote. She revealed that the mayor of Paris would have offered to come swim in the Seine with her before the opening of the Olympic Games, an offer that she did not hesitate to refuse.
“This brought me some special requests: Anne Hidalgo asked me to jump into the Seine with her. I declined. She also asked me if she had served as a model for the character of the mayor. In fact, it's more of a mix of her and Valérie Pécresse“, she said.
A hard blow for the politician, who could have benefited from the support of the actress during her controversial swim.
