PEOPLE – A relief for his loved ones. Nearly three weeks after his death in Argentina, the body of former One Direction band member Liam Payne will be returned to his family for repatriation to the United Kingdom. According to information given by police sources to the American channel ABC Newsthe prosecutor in charge of the case gave his agreement for the singer's body to be handed over to his father, Geoff Payne.

Liam Payne, 31, died on October 16 after a fatal fall from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, in the Palermo district. According to preliminary autopsy results, the fall caused multiple trauma as well as internal and external bleeding. The autopsy also revealed the presence of several substances in his body, including “pink cocaine,” a powerful drug. The circumstances of this fall remain unclear, and the tragedy has been classified as a “doubtful death” by the authorities.

Geoff Payne, the artist's father, arrived in Buenos Aires on October 18 to take the necessary steps to repatriate his son's body. The newspaper The Nation reports that Geoff Payne was received by prosecutor Andrés Madrea to obtain authorization for the transfer to the British cemetery located in the Chacarita district, in Buenos Aires, where the process of embalming the body could begin. This treatment, which lasts approximately 48 hours, aims to preserve the body for its return to the United Kingdom.

Repatriation should take place ” at the latest “ Monday, according to information from the Argentine newspaper The Nationand the funeral could be held next week in St Paul's Cathedral, London, rather than in Payne's home town of Wolverhampton. Geoff Payne had initially hoped that the return of the body would take between four and five days; however, due to the circumstances surrounding the death, the procedures took longer than expected.
