A busy day for SOPFEU in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean | Forest fires in Canada

The Society for the Protection of Forests Against Fire (SOPFEU) was called to intervene in some outbreaks of fires on Wednesday in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

At the start of the evening, a fire most likely caused by lightning required the intervention of the SOPFEU in the territory of Ferland-et-Boilleau.

The organization came to support the Fjord Intermunicipal Fire Safety Authority (RISIF) which had started the intervention.

According to Keven Gagné, deputy director of the RISIFthe home was located eight kilometers from Route 381, at km 97, where the Louis-Joseph Tremblay bridge is located.

Contacted around 7:15 p.m., he affirmed that the fire was under control and that the firefighters of the SOPFEU were at work, accompanied by four sappers from the RISIF. A tanker plane was also present, as was an aeroplane which directed operations. At 10:30 p.m., the website of the SOPFEU was updated to report an affected area of 0.4 hectares. However, the fire status is simply indicated as New, nothing more.

Another fire was brought under control near Larouche, also in the early evening. The area affected was estimated at 0.1 hectare.

In the afternoon, a fire was quickly extinguished outside the territory of Monts-Valin National Park. It would have been lit following human activity. It was the municipal firefighters who intervened first to put out the fire.

Eventually, a fourth blaze was brought under control, this time further north, approximately at the southern end of Pipmuacan Reservoir.

The flammability index remains extreme throughout the region. A ban on open fires has been in effect since Tuesday and a suspension of work in the forest is also required between noon and 8 p.m.
