“All I Want for Christmas Is You” celebrates its thirtieth anniversary on November 1, 2024. A hit with global notoriety which allows its performer, Mariah Carey, to earn several million dollars each year.
As the end-of-year holidays approach, a little song naturally comes to mind… Since its release on November 1, 1994, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has been a real success story since it allows for its interpreter, Mariah Carey, to retain her title of Queen of Christmas, and has done so for three decades. Ultra popular during the 90s, the hit continued to ride the wave of success thanks to the film “Love Actually” (2003) – another essential Christmas work – which used it in its soundtrack. Its cover by Olivia Olson is one of the most beautiful.

Now inseparable from the holidays, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” annually records dizzying listening records on platforms (it is close to two billion on Spotify). Mariah Carey's crystal-clear voice accompanies many households gathered around a tree and thousands of shoppers hanging out in the aisles of department stores during the Christmas period.
A tidy sum of several million dollars each year
But then, how much does the American diva earn each year thanks to this song? According to “The Economist”, Mariah Carey has already collected $60 million in royalties between 1994 and 2017. That is nearly $2.5 million each year for the distribution of her title. Indeed, the 54-year-old star is the co-author, co-producer and performer of the song. So many hats that allow him to pocket this tidy sum every year.
“When I wrote it, I had absolutely no idea the impact it was going to have around the world. I’m so grateful that so many people enjoy it every year,” the singer explained in 2021.
A true end-of-year holiday standard, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has also been the subject of numerous covers over the past thirty years. We think in particular of that of Michael Bublé in 2011, Demi Lovato or even Ariana Grande in 2012.
