World Bicycle Day: “We need to stop saying that cycling is easy”

On the occasion of World Bicycle Day, France Bleu Paris gives you advice on how to dare to take the plunge and go to work by bike.

This Monday, June 3, is World Bicycle Day, decreed by the UN. It’s very serious, this day was set in 2018 with 17 objectives for “greater social well-being and environmental protection”. So how can you convince yourself to take the plunge? Here are the tips from Jérôme Sorrel, who every weekend accompanies France Bleu Paris listeners with his column “All by bike”.

First advice: “take your time”. Second tip: “don’t overtake on the right”. Third advice: “enjoy and open your eyes”. No need to go head first, Jérôme Sorrel is campaigning to get started gradually, for example by testing the home-work route on weekends.

A cyclist since a car breakdown, Jérôme Sorrel assures that it is “possible to cycle anywhere in Ile-de-France”, even in towns that are not necessarily developed. “Its a question of confidence”.

However, Jérôme Sorrel recognizes the limits of discourse that is sometimes a little facile and moralizing. “We need to stop saying that cycling is easy, that our buttocks, legs don’t hurt, that we don’t sweat etc… but say that pedaling in Ile-de-France, y’ there are cities where it’s impossible, that’s not true.”

Getting into cycling also means equipping yourself, “Take some lights and a padlock or two!”.
