The President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron will speak on the European elections and the situation in Ukraine and Gaza in the 8 p.m. news on TF1 and France 2 live from Caen on Thursday, the channels announced this Sunday, June 2.

“On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the landing in Normandy and a few days before the European elections, Emmanuel Macron will be live from Caen, where the Head of State is participating in several commemorative ceremonies. He will return to these subjects as well as international news in Ukraine and Gaza”specified these two channels in a joint press release.

At 8:15 p.m. he will answer questions from Gilles Bouleau (TF1) and Anne-Sophie Lapix (France 2) during a special edition organized in the wake of the commemorations of the Allied landings in Normandy during the Second World War, June 6, 1944. , which will notably be attended by American President Joe Biden and his wife Jill.

Debate on speaking time

The presidential intervention could spark a new debate on its counting by the audiovisual regulator, Arcom, as speaking time for the Renaissance list in the European campaign, on June 9.

His speech at the Sorbonne on April 25 was finally counted in his “entirety” for his camp. The head of the Republicans, Eric Ciotti, announced that his party was going to seize Arcom. “The opposition must have the same speaking time”he demanded.

Three days before the election, it will in any case be a last minute speech in the campaign for the head of state whose camp is in difficulty. The majority candidate, Valérie Hayer, is at this stage clearly behind in the polls by the National Rally candidate Jordan Bardella and closely followed by the Socialist Party and Public Square candidate Raphaël Glucksmann.

On the Ukrainian issue, Emmanuel Macron could take the opportunity to clarify France’s position on the hypothetical sending of French troops on the ground or the delivery of weapons that could be used in kyiv during attacks on strategic targets on Russian territory .

Finally, while the conflict in Gaza is bogged down and demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people are gaining momentum, Emmanuel Macron has so far refused to follow in the footsteps of the three European countries (Spain, Ireland and Norway) having recognized the Palestinian state on Tuesday, saying he was ready to do so “at a convenient time” and not under the influence of“emotion”.
