The Presidents’ Trophy winner has not won the Stanley Cup since 2013

Each season, the Presidents’ Trophy is awarded to the team that accumulates the most points during the regular season.

This year, it was the New York Rangers who earned the “honor.”

The problem? For several years, the team that wins the Presidents’ Trophy has not been able to win the Stanley Cup.

It’s still quite obvious: since the Hawks won the said trophy and the Stanley Cup during the same season in 2013, no club has been able to repeat the feat.

It’s still been a while… And it fits with the format of the series which was modified 10 years ago:

The Rangers came close twice.

They made it to the conference finals in 2015… And they just lost (in the conference finals) to the Florida Panthers.

But in all of this, there is something that is quite easy to understand: even if a club dominates during the regular season, deep down… That does not mean that it is guaranteed to lift the big trophy in the end.

In the playoffs, it’s different because the game is not the same. The defensive systems are tighter, there is less space on the ice…

And this is especially where we seet true nature of each of the teams participating in the spring dance.

Obviously, the different teams must also perform in the regular season to ensure a place in playoffs.

That’s important too.

That said, can we blame the “new” series format to explain the situation?

The question arises because year after year, we see big clubs facing each other in the first round and it is certain that it changes the image of the series each season.

Still, it also proves that there is good parity in the National League (among competitive clubs).

– Great news for the Rangers.
