Violent clashes break out before the high-stakes match between Metz and Saint-Étienne

As the crucial promotion/relegation match between FC Metz And AS Saint-Étienne, violent clashes broke out between supporters of the two teams. The clashes took place this afternoon behind the Metz train station, involving around 150 supporters who got into a fight.

The violence was quickly suppressed by police, who dispersed the crowd using tear gas and made at least five arrests. According to L’Équipe, the surprising presence of ultras from FC Girondins de Bordeaux among the supporters of AS Saint-Étienne added to the tension.

Police ready to face more incidents

Given the explosive atmosphere, the police forces are on alert to deal with possible unrest outside the stadium. The CRS (Republican Security Companies) were mobilized, with two water cannon trucks strategically positioned outside the field to manage and prevent any further outbreak of violence.

Important issues for both teams

This play-off match is of considerable importance for both clubs. AS Saint-Étienne is fighting for promotion to Ligue 1, the upper echelon of French football, while FC Metz is fighting to avoid relegation to the second division. Metz face an uphill task as they must overcome a 2-1 first-leg deficit to retain their Ligue 1 status.

The intensity of the situation is reflected not only in the stakes of the match, but also in the passionate and sometimes undisciplined behavior of the supporters. As teams prepare for the deciding match, security measures remain strict to ensure the safety of all participants and the integrity of the event.
