The port of Nador West Med will host a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. Thus, the Kingdom of Morocco plans to launch a call for tenders this summer for its construction.

Morocco plans to launch a tender this summer to build a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal at the port of Nador West Med in the country’s northeast, according to Reuters, citing an oil and gas official. gas at the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development. According to Abdelghafour El Hadjaoui who presented the project, “the ministry expects financial closure in 2025, with construction, commissioning and commercial operations planned for 2026”.

The LNG terminal will be connected to an existing gas pipeline that allows Morocco to import 0.5 billion cubic meters of LNG per year from Spanish terminals, which is enough to power two small electricity generation plants, according to Reuters which specifies having seen the presentation of the Moroccan official.

Morocco also plans to connect the same pipeline to developing gas fields in the east and west of the country. According to ministry estimates, Morocco’s natural gas needs are expected to increase from 1 billion m3 currently to 8 billion m3 in 2027. Nador West Med is a deep-water port currently under construction, with capacity expected to reach 3,000 m3. 5 million containers.

As a reminder, 95% complete, the future deep water port, Nador West Med, built in Betoya Bay, located 30 km west of the city of Nador, will be focused on petroleum products. In addition to the 3 million containers that this platform will be able to accommodate when it opens, Nador West Med must be capable of processing up to 25 million tonnes of hydrocarbons. Indeed, thanks to the large quantities of oil that it will be able to process, the port will be able to offer storage silos for national fuel distributors, but also and above all for international oil transporters. If almost all of Europe gets its supplies from Rotterdam, the Kingdom hopes to play a similar role in the Mediterranean basin as well as for West Africa.

The port construction works contract was won in 2016 by a consortium made up of the Moroccan Société Générale des Travaux du Maroc (SGRM), the Turkish STFA and the Luxembourgish JDN.
