What are the movies and seriesiAre you not to be missed this week on the streaming platform?

MULLIGAN SEASON 2

  • Already available on Netflix
  • Duration: 10 episodes of 30 minutes

What is it about : While battling cruise ships, power outages, and their own incompetence, Mulligan and his cabinet try to keep what’s left of America afloat.

Why you should watch it: Because this is the continuation of the adventures of the least qualified president of all time. Mulliganit’s a bit as if the world had remained (almost) normal, but had decided to elect a character straight out ofIdiocracy to protect them from an alien attack. Result: in 24 hours of mandate, there remain less than 1,500 survivors on American soil.

This animated comedy for adults in the vein of‘Inside Job should therefore make you smile or at least blow your nose. In addition, this series created by Sam Means and Robert Carlock, whose previous feats of arms include Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt And 30 Rock, counts in its voice cast the hilarious Tina Fey, but also Phil Lamarr, Dana Carvey and Daniel Radcliff.

Atlas

  • Already available on Netflix
  • Duration: 1h58

What does it talk about ? A brilliant data analyst, Atlas Shepherd is misanthropic and totally distrustful of artificial intelligence. As she embarks on a mission that doesn’t go as planned, she is forced to trust the AI if she is to save the future of humanity…

Why you should watch it: For science, the taste for risk or just the irresistible call of giant robots (remember that Écran Large is a safe space for all fans of Pacific Rim). And if you had a good time watching the film The Mother (also on Netflix), we can add as another argument the return of a badass Jennifer Lopez in the lead.

There are also some other cool names in the cast of this Brad Peyton-directed film, like Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, and Mark Strong.

My own Oni

  • Already available on Netflix
  • Duration: 1h52

What does it talk about ? So shy that he doesn’t dare say no, a teenager is taken on a mystical journey to the heart of summer snow by a stubborn young girl in search of her missing mother.

Why you should watch it: Japanese animated film aimed at young audiences, My own oni promises to concentrate about a young boy’s literal and symbolic journey through a fantastic, magical and magical world. Another encouraging element: the film is directed by Tomotaka Shibayama (one of the directors of the friendly Far from me, close to you released on Netflix in 2020), who notably worked for Studio Ghibli.

Added to that its highly talented voice actors and its touching story on paper, prepare yourself to embark in a world of soft lines and vibrant colors.

Bionic

  • Available May 29
  • Duration: 1h50

What does it talk about ? In a dystopian future where robotic prosthetics have redefined sport, two sisters compete in the long jump. But their rivalry leads them down a dangerous path.

Why should you watch it? Bionic seems to have ambition. Mixing a priori sports film and futuristic science fiction thriller, the production of Afonso Poyart (Prémonitions) has everything to be thrilling entertainment, while posing interesting reflections on the future of technology and transhumanism. In the manner of Welcome to Gattaca which raised the question of eugenics on a societal scale, Bionic apparently poses the debate on the artificial augmentation of humans and their legitimacy in our future.

The film does not stop there in the mixture of genres, because it also seems to affect the world of organized crime articulated around these prostheses, almost reminiscent of the charcudocs from Cyberpunk 2077. A nice cocktail therefore.

The colors of evil: red

  • Available May 29
  • Duration: 1h51

What does it talk about ? A gruesome murder on a Tricity beach reveals an unsuspected criminal underworld and tests the courage of a prosecutor and a grieving mother searching for answers.

Why should you watch it? For all fans of Mindhunter in need of psychopathic killers to decipher, The Colors of Evil: Red, may be for you. Here, there are not several serial killers to question, but only one to track down. However, understanding the latter should be central to this Polish criminal thriller which promises to be rather gripping (at least entertaining). If the film does not seem to reinvent the formula, it still seems to have mastered its codes to create a heavy atmosphere. Perfect for a rainy Sunday.

Eric

  • Available May 30
  • Length: 6 episodes of 60 minutes

What does it talk about ? New York, 1980s. A desperate man searches for his 9-year-old son alongside a stubborn cop, while facing his own demons.

Why should you watch it? Because Eric should delve into unhinged psychology of a Bennedict Cumberbatch in creepy puppet/soft toy creator mode and worried dad. With its oppressive staging (from what we see in the trailer), this miniseries by Abi Morgan will seek both to resolve the mystery of the child’s disappearance, but also to delve into the the labyrinthine mind of its protagonist.

The cast also includes Gaby Hoffmann, McKinley Belcher III and Dan Fogler. This thriller that we hope is poignant might also remind some of us of some small childhood traumas, in a way that is surprisingly similar to what the hero risks going through…
