The supporters who accompanied Olympique de Marseille to Montpellier were unable to witness their team’s victory on Sunday.
The prefect banned them from entering the stadium due to their excessive numbers and the presence of hooded individuals equipped with iron bars.
If OM shone on a sporting level, returning to victory on Sunday by outclassing Montpellier (5-0), the evening was darker for its supporters. More numerous than the authorized limit, those who had planned to attend their team’s match at the Mosson stadium were forced to “turn around”announced the Hérault prefecture in the evening.
In a message broadcast on X, the prefect of Hérault also mentioned the presence among them “hooded individuals equipped with iron bars and smoke bombs” and reports “projectile jets” against the police. “Under these conditions, public order cannot be ensured for the match”he estimated, therefore prohibiting “the movement of all OM supporters to Montpellier”where the match kicked off at 8:45 p.m.
“There were 650 of them”specified the divisional commissioner of Hérault to AFP, recalling that the gauge of parking reserved for visitors had been set for this match at 450 Marseille supporters. “When we asked them to turn back, at least 150 individuals faced the police”he added. “We had to use force to restore public order.”
According to a source close to the matter, the supporters traveled on board eleven buses. Supervised by the police, they were forced to leave the department.
