At least 7 dead in Georgia wharf collapse

At least seven people lost their lives late Saturday afternoon after part of a dock collapsed in Georgia, United States.

The sad event took place on Sapelo Island where a gathering was taking place to celebrate the Gullah Geschee community, made up of descendants of black slaves, the state Department of Natural Resources confirms to CNN.

At least 20 people fell into the water when a dock walkway collapsed shortly before 4 p.m., Police Chief Chris Hodge said during a press briefing the evening of the incident.

Six individuals were seriously injured and two were transported to a hospital.

The cause of the dock collapse is still unknown.

“The gateway has been secured on Sapelo Island and the incident is currently under investigation,” the ministry said in a statement.
